Intro:
Today, we are going to talk about the notion of « Myth and Hero ». I would like to give a definition of this notion.
A myth is a story that may or may not be true. In these stories, the author shows us an epic character and his progression.
A hero can be fictive or real. He / she is seen as an example for a lot of people and will always fight against the bad despite all the dangers. He / she thinks about others before about him/herself. But the definition of a hero could change according to our personal values.
To illustrate this notion, we will introduce Napoleon Bonaparte. Also called Napoleon the first, he was the first Emperor of the French, from 1804 to 1815.
In this report, we are going to ask us one question: Was Napoleon really a hero?
Development:
- He was born in Ajaccio in France in 1769. At the age of 15, he studied in the military school of Paris but his classmates didn’t really like him so he was a solitary student.
He started to gain reputation in 1793 while he was in the front especially during the war of Italy, during which they won.
But his upward mobility really began in 1799 when Bonaparte led the coup d’état during which he became consul of France. He abolished the old treaties and created a new constitution.
The 18th of May 1804, he made history by becoming the 1st Emperor of French.
He led a lot of wars and won a lot of them like the battle of Austerlitz. But after the defeat of Leipzig in 1813 and the defeat of Waterloo in 1815 he abdicated and was exiled to the isle of St-Hélène, where he died in 1821.
- What did Napoleon made to be known as a hero?
First of all, he was respected by his soldiers because of the wars he led. He had a great authority over them and that’s what led them to victory. In fact he was known for his qualities of tactician.
He reestablished the French supremacy by conquering a lot of territories.
He was the one who sat up the code civil and standardized the different territories. He also created the system of school which finishes with the baccalaureate.
He was also considered as a hero because he ended the royalty by becoming a consul.
At the end of his life, he said “Je désire que mes cendres reposent sur les bords de la Seine, au milieu de ce peuple français que j'ai tant aimé.” I wish that my ashes rest on the edges of the Seine, in the middle of these French people that I loved so much.
- Why can we say that he isn’t a hero ?
Despite all we said earlier, Napoleon 1st wasn’t always a kind man. He ended the royalty but Napoleon still surrounded himself with a court as the kings used to do and restored the titles of nobility. He deleted the freedom of the media, made exile or imprisoned the people who criticized him: the police was watching everybody.
He was also an egoist person because enthroned him himself as an emperor and he enthroned his wife as an empress. Normally, it’s the pope who makes this.
He also sent a lot of people to the other side of Europe for wars that didn’t concerned them. He was seen as a sort of a tyrant by these people.
