1. Introduction (name of the project, geographical location, date and brief description of the project)
Dakota Access Pipeline is a 1,825 km pipeline project in the US, The Dakota Access Pipeline is intended to allow a connection between the oilfields of the Bakken Formation in northwestern North Dakota to Stanley and storage tanks near Patoka, Illinois, crossing South Dakota and Iowa2.
2. Those in favour of the project
Group at the origin of the project | Are Texas and Energy Transfer Partners, Phillips 66, Canada Enbridge and Marathon Petroleum |
Importance of the project for the scientific (or economic) community (their arguments) | Because it is controversial as to its necessity, its potential effects on the environment and its effects on climate change The Dakota Access Pipeline is expected to deliver 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day |
3. The protesters | |
Who are the protesters? | Protesters on the Amerindians of Iowa and North Dakota opposed the pipeline, including Fox and several Sioux tribal nations as well as several thousand people. |
Their arguments to oppose the project | The reason is that the pipeline would threaten sacred cemeteries and the water quality in the area. A number of Amerindians opposed it for its passage near the Standing Rock Indian Reserve. |
Their actions (legal and physical) | In April 2016, Elder LaDonna Brave Bull Allard of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe begins the construction of a camp as chief town for the safeguarding of the Sioux cultural heritage and spiritual resistance to the pipeline1. During the summer of 2016, the number of campers at Standing Rock increased to several thousand people |
Their results | On April 4, a spokesperson for Energy Transfer Partners confirms that the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline is complete and is filling up with oil to be ready for service in mid-April In Seattle, city leaders voted to sell $ 3 billion to Wells Fargo Bank for public placements |
4. Your personal opinion
For me, it is important to be able to allow a connection between oil fields because it will stink a lot of oil but do not threaten the sacred cemeteries Since this is a lack of respect towards their communities. I think they have to find an arrangement that suits them both. |
