Fiche oral d’anglais sur le thème « spaces and exchange »

Introduction:

My presentation is going to deal with spaces and exchanges. This notion brings up, the increase of exchanges between various spaces which converted the world into an increasingly interconnected place. Through trade, conquest, emigration and communication, nations have always influenced others beyond their borders, culturally, economically, politically and scientifically.

To illustrate that notion, I have chosen illegal immigration, strengthened by the increase of world disparities, and more precisely, the Mexican immigration toward the united states. That’s why we can wonder: immigration toward  the USA dream or nightmare?

Firstly, I’m going to present the reasons for departure, secondly the dangers and difficulties of the trip and then, upon their arrival, their integration  in the american society.

I-

Each year a growing flow of population migrate to the usa in order to find work and improve their standard of living. The border has become a new pole of attraction and acts like a magnet on many deprived Mexicans who still believe in the american dream.  Actually, they are lured to the promise of a better life, a new life, bringing more healthcare, material confort, decent housing, education( so that their children start off from the right foot in life) but above all a job( because they know, they can find unskilled employment quite easily. Sometimes emigrating appears as a question of survival for the whole family who hope to escape poverty, thanks to the sent currencies . A great number of destitues  aim at climbing up the social ladder and becoming american citizens. Nevertheless, their ultimate goal is to be able to come back to their country and live a peaceful life with enough money.

II-

To live their american dream, seems to be worth risking their lives because the trip to freedom can turn into a nightmare and the promises for a better life are broken by those who use immigrating for their own benefit . Indeed, the wetbacks depend entirely on the smugglers who only want to take advantage of their inexperience and gullibility to make profit. Moreover, their  guides can abandon them to their fate in the middle of the desert, without food and ports of all without water. Finally, the border is watched over by regular patrols.

III-

Then , upon their arrival they experiment a life of undocumented people and they are unskilled. That’s why they work in fields, building construction, doing the painful and menial jobs , the american often find regarding. However, they benefit from the salad bowl because the latinos play a very important part in american society, as they represent 50 % of the population.
