Hi my blog family today I'm going to tell you about my last trip to Thailand and my cultural
shock.
First, I was shocked about this: In Thai culture, greeting someone is an act of great
significance. The manner of greeting is determined according to the social standing of both
people, and making the wrong move is considered a disgrace and should be avoided at all
costs. However, if correctly used, greetings are an opportunity to show a sense of respect for
the Thai people.
Outward appearances are important to Thai people. In fact, Thai locals appreciate
foreigners who make an effort to maintain a professional and reserved appearance.
But, in beach towns like Phuket, Hua Hin and Krabi, Thai locals are more accustomed to
foreigners wearing bikinis and swimming attire at the beach. However, when going for lunch
or a stroll around town, tourists should cover up.
I had no particular view on the Thailand people but I learned that they are very open-
minded. For example if a tourist pronounces a word incorrectly in Thai, it is likely to have an
entirely different meaning from what they intended to say. The upside is that Thais are very
forgiving when foreigners, try to speak their language, and once they understand what a
foreigner wants, they will teach them how to say the word correctly.
When speaking English in Thailand – especially in places outside of Bangkok – you should to
speak slowly and clearly.
I always knew that in Thailand the royal family was important but I thought that worshipping
them was a stereotype. Indeed, they are highly revered by the local population.
Another stereotype that is actually a common fact there: you must take off your shoes when
entering homes, temples or buildings that have an image of Buddha inside.
What a surprise when you get to know a population when you already have preconceived
ideas. So, thank you to follow me in my travel all over the world! Bye.
