Power is defined by the ability to accomplish a certain act. It can also be the ability to influence other's behavior. Moreover it can take shape in the capacity to manipulate and command a community. Power is exercised in all walks of life such as different fields and domains. All in all power is the possession of control over something or someone. As to how a person obtains power is a different story, power can be acquired in the case of public influencers, but it can also be inborn if we're talking royalty. Today we'll be asking ourselves to what extent can power be a double-edged sword that can build or ruin depending on who's wielding it?
Let's begin with the western media document where we're shown a camera man who's insisting on presenting to the world only the negative side of the less developed countries in Africa. And here we can clearly see that those who hired that man chose only to bring their audience the downside part of the truth. Meanwhile, a whole other part of that same country is developing and shining and rising to the world. But as the USA or the western globe in general likes to keep those under developed countries in the palms of their hand, they tend to show certain parts pf the truth that will benefit them which in this particular case are the ruins of that African country.
Next, we have a video telling us the story of Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, and how just a few words changed his life. We can see here how his mother had a choice wether or not to tell him the terrible truth or make up some new words that will change the course of his life. It's clear how that choice changed everything. By using that letter to do good she motivated her son to be the man that he turned out to be, a great man and inventor, basically a hero to humanity.
To finish off we have a quote from Abraham Lincoln that says “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power” Abraham Lincoln a man who himself once wielded power as president of the USA brings us the whole truth in a sentence. That power is defined by its holder’s character, his intentions. Power itself is neutral but when put in one’s hand it takes the shape of his beliefs, his thoughts. Therefore you only know a man’s character when he wields power because by then he’ll have control and how he uses that control reveals his true self.
To conclude, power like most things is never bad or good by itself it is defined by its wielder and so comes the idea of the double-edged sword because he who has power can either do great things or terrible ones and I stress this with the examples I just proclaimed. Now this makes us think as the one with power has an effect on it can power do the same. Can the wielder of power be truly corrupted by it if he’s not strong enough?
