The places define the places where there are some influence that is to say where there are or there were important things happening
Forms of power can be people or institutions that make things happening
In the united states of america, universities are this kind of places
We have for example a picture of harvard university. On the photograph, we can see a big building with three banners between huge columms. On one of the flags we can see a motto "veritas" which means "truth" and brings out the university's values.
So there are people who are going to university but what selection for higher education ?
We are going to talk about the cost of university then how to cope with this cost and finally the purpose of higher education
First, why is the cost of university a real issue ?
This is a real issue because :
It is about social justice: can universities be free ?
It seems impossible for the university to be free as it will mean that everybody will be able to go to university
University does cost money and somebody has to pay. But who? Families are'nt always able to pay.
And is financial aid sufficient ?
Student loan debt is a real problem.
High fees are a message to young people of limited economic means that they are not allowed to develop themselves as they see fit i order to contribut back to their society.
We can see that a CNN report about a protest over a tuition fees in london in september 2010
This TV report which was released by the famous American channel CNN news, deals withs the students protest against tuition fees.
Bitter, anger, violence are the student's reactions. They explain taht some sutdents won't be able to go to university anymore. The supporters of the low insist on the fact that the students will be helped.
Now we are going to talk about how to cope with the cost of university. To cope with the cost we have different possibilities. We can apply for scholarships, either merit-based, or need-based, or specific ( student specific, college-specific, or carrer-specific) we can ask for student loans that we will have to pay back when we have completed our education, we can work part time and ask our parents for help. We can see how to cope with the cost with the story of crystal. Crystal a former student recalls her experience at university and how she managed to ovaid student loans. As years went on, she successivly had a few scholarships a certain number of add jobs and help from her parents to go on studying.
Having no student loans was them "a mixture of work, luck, and help" she wrote.
Finally, what is the real purpose of higher education ?
