IDEE DE PROGRES – AMBIVALENCE DU PROGRES

I’m going to talk about « Idea of progress ». To begin with, I’d like to state a definition of progress. Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in terms of sciences, technology, modernization, living condition, etc. Even if one thinks for the good of the biggest number of progress, it generates rejected, new pressures and danger. Now, I propose we look at a question: « progress: advantage or disadvantage? ».

First, progress is an advantage. We have seen in class a text who relate the story of the Suffragettes. The Suffragettes was a group of militant who fight for equal rights between men and women. For example, they fight for equal pays and the right to vote. We have also seen in class a text who relate the story of Henry Ford He was the founder of the Ford Motor Company. He revolutionize the idea of mass production and the automobile production. By this two example, the progress is a good idea because they change the lifestyle in better. But the progress are not always good …

Secondly, progress is disadvantage and he can make victim.                                                          The first victims of progress are the children. Indeed, in many countries such as China, India or Pakistan, children are obliged to work in bad conditions.                                                                                                                    The second victims of progress are workers. Henry Ford want to automate his production to product more and to have more money. And if he do this, some workers lose their job. And, with the assembly line, workers do the same things all the day. It was denounce in Modern Times, Chaplin Charlie.                                  The third victims of the progress is the citizens. For example with the atomic bomb in Japan. The atomic bomb was an idea of progress but this progress wasn’t well used.

To conclude, progress is to think to improve current life. However, him do not make that happy and can leave collateral damage.
