US immigration: what has changed since Donald Trump?
America is, and has always been, both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. Debates over the immigration system and its enforcements which are being relayed by the Newsweek (doc 1), The Washington Post (doc 2), The Guardian ( doc 3), can show different perspectives. A map from the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (doc 4) which points out the percent of arrests of immigrants without criminal convictions in 2018, and a caricature (doc 5) which critics the immigration policymaking of Trump, help us build an analysis on the subject.
How does the united states have a powerful and increasingly strict migratory system?
The United states have an effective migratory system but becoming stricter. This hold to further consequences.
Firstly, the US has established a functioning legal immigration system in which the rule of law is restored. The first document shows that everyone has the right to claim asylum in the US, as the country is part of the 1951 convention of the status of refugee. Rules have been made to protect a majority of persecuted people and to not let abuser of the system enter ( for example, a proof of persecution in their country is necessary). A naturalization test has also been created to let immigrants become American citizens after a period of 5 years on the territory (doc 2). Furthermore, a height number of federal agencies (ICE) have been poot in place to control the immigration flus(doc 3,4).
But as it is mentioned in all the articles, Donald Trump’s administration has made (especially for immigrants coming from Muslim countries and for people without an advanced education (doc 2)) immigration more difficult, making US immigration services changed their policy regarding interviews for asylum, changing their naturalization test, separating families and having an intolerant policy about it.
The consequences of these strict rules are that some cases are being penalized ( LGBTQ people for instance). People who can pay for an attorney and people not from Latino countries are being privileged. Some states are being more active in the reporting of illegal persons without criminal records. Furthermore, Trump administration has increased the number of employees and arrests but its number is still lower than under Barack Obama’s administration. Protests are being hold to criticize the ICE agency. And caricatures are being draw to denunciate Trump’s policy.
So to conclude, as more and more migrants are trying to become US citizens, Trump’s administration is making it harder to obtain it. Opinions are being released about the subject in the documents.
