The Idea of Progress : what effect do these « advances » have on our society? Do they always have a positive effect on the way we live?

Notion n°2 : The Idea of Progress

Introduction: The notion I'm going to deal with is “The Idea of Progress”. The notion will be illustrated by three documents: a cartoon, an extract of the novel and a video. When we think about the various of progress, we can to ask what effect do these « advances » have on our society? Do they always have a positive effect on the way we live?

The Idea of Progress is the theory that the different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become happier in terms of quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress).

Aspect n°1: technical progress with the communication

Of all forms of progress, an obvious form is the technique. This is when we discover methods that make life easier such as internet is the biggest technological progress today. This progress has been developed with the emergence of social networks. This allows us to speak and even to see our friends in real time even thousands of kilometers. Unfortunately, this can have an impact as a departure from reality. We can forget his true friends and think only virtual friends. Internet allows good things but it can be misused and create isolation or psychological damage.

Aspect n°2: social progress

        Over time, the place of women in society has changed. Previously, women were only devoted to motherhood. Today, they can choose their future. To illustrate this, we studied a text in which a young woman, Margaret, decided to go to war to escape his life was programmed. For her, the war is an opportunity not to be married to a man of his rank but to help people. This war brings her the opportunity to choose life. Today, women can choose their future. This is certainly due to laws such as women's suffrage, for example. It is in social progress.

Aspect n°3: technical progress with the high-tech

        Man has always wanted to conquer the Earth and the solar system. The human being has a spirit of conquest. We have seen through the report studied. This shows the recent discovery of gravitational waves when two black holes collide. This discovery confirms that Einstein had said. Currently, technological discoveries are becoming more and better thanks to new technologies. The study of the Earth is almost already completed. The solar system can be better and better discover with robots for example, and even go back to the Big Bang. All this progress is a possibility for the future.

Conclusion:         

Progress is the same positive majority there are disadvantages. Technological advances facilitate trade but cause isolation with real friends. Social progress is mainly present in the rich countries which cause a large difference between countries. Technical progress allows a breakthrough for engineers and researchers. For me, the best progress is primarily medical. Can be transplanted people through organ donation. The best recent innovation is the artificial heart. Thanks to this progress, sick people will live longer. But, is one day, progress will have no problem ?
