Spaces and exchanges: why people immigrate to America ?

The notion "Spaces and exchanges" deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterised our modern-day world.  to illustrate this notion we are going to talk about immigration, specifically immigration to America. Indeed we may wonder why people immigrate to America ?

At first we will see what are the reasons for immigration and in a second part why immigrants choose america.

At the begining, the immigrants mainly came from europe, but today they come from another part of the world. Indeed they are from Asia or Latin America. The document « Destination America » which is a chart representing immigration to the US illustrates this. There are different reasons for immigrating, this is what we learnt in the document "new America" studied in class. In some countries, people were persecuted or killed because they couldn't have their own religion but they also left for political opinions. Indeed, some belonged to minorities so they could be killed. Others left because they hoped to find a job and to improve their living conditions but very often they left to have more freedom. So did not always have the choice. For example, if there is a war in their country they are forced to protect themselves and sometimes to leave.

There are different types of immigration, illegal or legal immigration. If you go to the USA illegaly, you are undocumented so you can be arrested and sent back to your countries.

Because of the different waves of immigrants America as become a melting-pot, it's a nation of nations. Indeed, immigrants often choose this destination. For exemple the first reason for Mexican is because it's near. Indeed they choose the USA because there is a border between the 2 countries. Immigrants also come to live the "American Dream". They want to make their dream come true. In other word the american dream is a chance to begin a new life. For a lot of people, it's the promised land and the symbol of freedom. Young people leave their country to be able to study in America because there are a lot of prestigious universities. This is what we have studied in the doc "a shot at  the American dream" in a comment posted by Miguel a Mexican came to the USA to study in order to have a good job and improve his life.

He met difficulties to pay for the tuition fees which are very expensive. In the document « personal stories » which was an audio document, we heard the story of a young woman who left her home country to come and live in New York because she wanted to become a profesional dancer and in his country it was not possible. A lot of people think America is a country of hope and opportunities and Immigrant hope to have a better life, education, career or job.

In conclusion, while immigrants may encounter difficulties in integrating in America, because of poor command of the language or dicriminations, they still sneak into the USA hoping to achieve American dream.
