When the choreographer won’t fly, the Dancers rehearse by Skype
Hello, I’m going to present you an article about the dance but also about the environment and how these topics which don’t have any common points can be related.
First, I will introduce you the article untitled “When the choreographer won’t fly, the Dancers rehearse by Skype” which was written by Roslyn Sulcas. It was published on September 23, 2019 in The New York Times.
So, Roslyn Sulcas is a dance critic who grew up in South Africa. She was a ballet dancer before studied English literature at university. She lived in South Africa, England and France before living in the United States of America where she’s writer for The New York Times. Concerning The New York Times is a really big and famous daily newspapers in the United States of America. It’s distributed at the international scale. Generally, everybody knows this newspaper.
Now, I will present you the protagonists of this article. They are two. The first is Jérôme Bel who is a French contemporary dancer and choreographer considered like an experimental choreographer. He’s 63 years old and he currently lives in France. He especially choreographed the ballet named “The show must go on” in 2001.
The second protagonist is Catherine Gallant who is an American dancer, choreographer and teacher of dance in the United States of America. I don’t find her age but I know she created a dance company which is called “Catherine Gallant / Dance”.
So, this article tells us about the decision of Mr. Bel to not to take any airplanes this year. Currently, he’s working on a choreography with Ms. Gallant while there’s six hours of difference between them. In fact, Mr. Bel works from his kitchen table on his computer in France and Mrs. Gallant works from the rehearsal room in the United States of America. Together, they rehearse for the modern-dance ballet named “Isadora Duncan” in which Ms. Gallant dances the solo of Isadora.
Indeed, Mr. Bel is an international choreographer as a consequence he makes ballets all around the world but he stays in his kitchen and he uses Skype to follow the repetitions and the representations without using airplanes. He feels concerned about the protection of the environment.
Furthermore, airplanes pollute a lot that’s why he decided to not to use them this year even if his job will become more difficult for him. He said that the increase of youth protests about climate change and the realization about greenhouse gas emissions from air travel encourage him to pay attention to the environment. He doesn’t want to contribute to the ecological crisis. He’s ready to put his career off even if his two full-time assistants don’t agree with him because of all their projects at the international scale.
However, Ms. Gallant wants to work with this choreographer because she started this project with him that’s why they decided to continue to work together thanks to Skype. It’s very hard because the screen froze several times but there are solutions. Nevertheless, Mr. Bel tells us that is the price to pay to protect the environment and in her side, Ms. Gallant crosses her fingers to improve to learn correctly the choreography.
In fact, since numerous years, the population is concerned by the environment. Indeed, there are more measures put in place to try to protect it for instance recycling, the attempt to reduce gas emissions etc. Even politics worry and try to fight against the global warming and other environmental problems.
