Anglais : PLACE AND FORM OF POWER
INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION
I am going to talk about the notion of places and forms of power. First, I would like to give a definition of places. Places » could be important buildings or institutions that represent a certain form of power,
Power is the ability to control others and to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition. This of course leads to conflict between those who have and exercise power and those who have none or little of it.
PROBLEMATIC
To talk about this notion i will be using various as a structure for my remarks.
PLAN
In this notion I will talk about of higher education in UK and in US. Indeed, in these countries, the cost of university is really expensive. To what extent are the degrees in universities in UK or in US instruments of power ? First, I m going to talk about the tuition fees and afterwards the disagreement between people about that.
1ERE PARTIE ; THE TUITION FEES
Firstly, the tuition fees in college in United States and in United Kingdom are really high, so everybody can't go to university. according to a video named “ does higher education pay off?” we can see a young woman explains that when you want to go to university you can't imagine the money which represent tuition fees because it's very high ; so you go to university and then you pay frequently for the rest of your life. In this way, according to this video, we saw that 40% of adults above the age of 35 are still paying off students loans. This video shows the power of degree, because to have a degree is really important since it could help to earn a decent living, be more powerful and lead a happier life, so have a good job and eventullay have more responsabilities. Also you will have a better luck to have a better paid job. This is the reason why everyone want to go to university even if people get a debt for many years. So, the access to university is really hard for many peole, it's an instrument of power.
In a video taken from a report of PBS on the campus of Boston’s university in 2008, we learn some very moving testimonies about some students who were forced to get into debt a lot because they want to study. For example, Ian Witherby, who will graduate from UMass Boston this spring with a degree in philosophy and at least $65,000 in federal and private loans. He says that it takes to him approximately 20 years to pay off all his debts.
2EME PARTIE :THE DISAGREMENT BETWEEN PEOPLE ABOUT THAT
Secondly ,today, the university in United Kingdom is very selective. Indeed, in 2010, there were many demonstrations in London. We have studied a document named “student discontent” we can see many students protesting against the rise of universities tuition fees. The scene take place in the streets of London on september 2010.
According to them, the cost of education is far too expensive. For must of them higher education is not accessible to everyone, people can't always pay. We can see the power of degree, because students protest a lot, students are really motivated. A degree represents an access for the future. It's also a personal satisfaction
- The social hierarchies emerge because the entry is not possible for all.
Universities are places where the power is made because competition is fierce. But the cost of tuition fees is rising more and more and are becoming a matter of public debates . Is it profitable to pay high tuition fees to go to university or will they become free for equality of opportunities between everybody? - Emilie Adams and James Bartle, members of the youth parliament debated about this question. - Emilie Adams is against the rise of tuition fees.
