PLACES AND FORMS OF POWER

I’m going to deal with " Places and forms of power". 

In politics and social science, power is the ability to influence other people. This of course leads to conflict between those who have power and those who don’t. 

All along this year we have discussed on different themes explaining that notion, and for me finally, the themes that seem to bestly illustrate that notion are : « blacklisted », « border control », and « South Africa ». 

So, we are going to see 

«  Wich are the various visible forms of power in the society ?  ».

First of all we will talk about the power of the government, next we will talk about the power detained by the citizens. 

 I. Power of the government

The power of the government influences all peoples and it has been particulary visible during the   Cold War with what has been called  the «  witch hunt  » period . 

The american’s government  hunted all Communist. 

Anybody could be found guilty of being a communist, and a lot of people have been arrested on that simple charge. 

This time is called «  McCarthyism  » because of Joseph McCarthy, a important politic man who has developed the WitchHunt. 

A lot of people denounced communists because they are afraid by the government’s power, it’s what we have seen in « … ». 

The government uses Fear but not only.

More recently, an important population control by the government has been reported in the «  Border Control  ».

When we talk about the border control we talk about the US/Mexican Fence. 

This fence has been built  to prevent illegal Mexican aliens from crossing the border .

There are milice patrol called the « Minute Men » all along this fence in order to control all crossing between Usa and Mexico. 

But as the fence doesn’t cover the all border, many people try to cross it despite the controls, sometimes following very dangerous ways.

So, the government wanted more security and the project of a virtual fence  have been defined. This project has been created by Bush, and stopped by Obama since it was too costly. 

That’s what we saw in the document : «  bordel control  ». 

 II. Power of citizens

We notice that the government, using different ways, detains a great power on the population.

But this applies in the other way too.
