Myths and Heroes
Introduction
I am going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. First of all, I would like to give a definition of this notion: A Myth is a popular belief shared by a lot of people and a hero is a person with super human qualities, who is admired by the people. To illustrate this notion, I will focus on a founding myth of the American Nation. Is the American Dream a myth or a reality? First, I will define the concept of the American Dream. Secondly, I will concentrate on the character of Andrew Carnegie, a man who embodies the American Dream. Finally, I will try to show that the American dream can be called into question.
I Concept of American Dream
To begin with, I'll say that the American Dream is characterized by the idea of an America full of promises and very attractive. Tis idea from the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It lets people think that anybody living in America can to bootstrap one’s way out of poverty. People can to climb up the social ladder. That is the reason why the foreigners came to America to make a dream come true. The song I chose, American Land, interpreted by Bruce Springsteen. It summarizes the vision that the majority of immigrants had of the country. This song praised America, described as a land of opportunities, meaning that the country has a lot thing to offer, like gold and diamonds.
Some people like Andrew Carnegie embodies the American Dream, making it a reality. That is my second part.
II People who have successfully
Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist and entrepreneur. He started in the textile industry and then considerably developed the American steel industry between the Civil War and the early 20th century. He became extremely wealthy and donated most of his money to build libraries, schools and universities in the United States.
Andrew Carnegie is a hero for many Americans, because he demonstrated that the American Dream was a reality. He can be considered as the first one self-made man. It’s a man who succeeded by oneself. However, today, the accessibility to the American Dream often called into question. This is my last part.
III American Dream is dead?
The American Dream appears to be more and more questioned. It’s remains dream only. Indeed, a lot of immigrants are dead by hoping to be rich. Otherwise, today the United States is characterized by increasing inequalities. Firstly, they are school disparities: it is more difficult for the lower to afford an Ivy League education. Many children are trapped in dismal schools and often drop out of school. Secondly, economic disparities, in fact the growing national debt comes to hit hard the average taxpayer. People believe less and less this dream
Conclusion
To conclude, I'll simply say that the American Dream stay a reality for some people as Barack Obama, o Walt Disney. But it gradually becomes a myth, because the disparities don’t permit to work one’s way up.
In reality, The American Dream has always been a myth for some people, voluntarily excluded like the African American community, for instance, by practising the segregation
