Spaces and exchanges

Introduction:

I’m talking about the notion “spaces and exchanges”. To make thing clear, I will explain what mean spaces and exchanges. An exchange is an act of giving one thing and receiving another in return. As we can talk about when people leave their native country to settle in a host country. A space is a place where is exchange. We will try to answer the following question connected with the topic: “How are the USA and its immigrants shaping each other?”. In order to illustrate this motion, I have chosen to talk about immigration in the USA. Firstly, we’ll see that America is a multi-cultural society, then who is enriching America and to finish who is facing difficulties.

I -A multi-cultural society:

The first piece of material we studied is a picture which must be taken in a Chinese quarter in the USA because the street is lined with Chinese shops and signs. Thanks to the Star spangled Banner (the American flag) we know we are in America. This picture shows us that Chinese immigrants have had an impact over the quarter insofar as they have changed the urbanscape so Chinese immigrants have become part of America.

The second document I want to show you is the picture where two young Latino women are dancing in Mexican traditional clothes. They must be celebrating an important event in their native country. They must feel proud to show their culture to the American people who are attending the event. The women stand out for their origins and not just blend in the US culture.

Another document is The snapshot of America published by the website migrationpolicy.org.2015. We can see that immigrants mostly came from Asia, Central and South America and Europe, they settle in the coastal states which are more accessible and next to their native country. We can see also that America is an attractive country for immigrants; they represent 41.3 million people in 2013 in the USA or 13% of the American population.

The last piece of material of this part is America’s Brain Drain which focuses on foreign students who go in the USA in order to study and graduate in the best college of engineering, or mathematics. We can guess that studying in America is an asset for skilled students resume.

Both immigrants and the American’s benefit from this interaction because it reinforces their links and help shape the US society.

II- Who is enriching America:

A silent majority is an extract of an article from a website; it focuses on the German immigrants. The text shows that they have had a strong influence over many fields like politics, educational system and everyday life in the USA. This piece of material shows that Germans (like Chinese in the first part) are shaping and enriching America.

Hablas espanol? is a text from the Associated Press and CNN which deals with Los Angeles and Miami where a growing number of people speak Spanish because had replaced English in people’s everyday life. There, every shop, universities and other places use Spanish because the majority of people are Latinos who speak Spanish, so the influence of the language is big. So Spanish immigrants who settle in Miami or Los Angeles don’t need to learn English because they can speak Spanish.

Immigrants are enriching the USA thanks to their different languages and cultures from their native country.
