I am going to talk about the notion of progress, but first i would like to give you the meaning.
Progress normally implies a change for the better, so if you make progress you improve. Analyzing this notion raises the following question, Does progress is always beneficial to mankind
To begin with I’m going to talk about the Afro-americans rights which has also been promoted in the movie Selma. After the American Civil war and the abolition of slavery in the 19th century, the US Constitution sought to secure the rights of the ex-slaves but during the reconstruction era, they were soon deprived of civil rights under the Jim Crow laws and during the following centuries many efforts were made by African Americans to secure their rights like the non-violent movement of MLK. That’s how their effort turned into The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Right Act of 1965. Despite all of that, they still have inegalties in the 21st century like we can see in the media with the abusive power of police officers
Help have been a big part of the different changes in the American society, it can also be important in the familial framework
Now let’s introduce the film « My Sister’s keeper » directed by Nick Cassavetes in 2009, which put in scene the youngest daughter Anna Fitzgerald ( a designer baby ) suing her mother ( starred by Cameron Diaz ) for medical emancipation because she helps her other sister to survive. But first what is a designer baby … a designer baby is a baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes/characteristics. It’s beneficial for Kate who suffers leukemia her older sister because she don’t need o run to the hospital to find the right blood or kidney, she already have her match who doesn’t have any type of illness which is perfect for her condition. Despite the pros, the youngest daughter doesn’t feel like a normal eleven-years-old girl, she can’t play football, drink any types of beverages … doing basic activities that pre teenagers do. It’s also affects her physically and psychologically
To sum up, progress isn’t always beneficial to mankind because like i said previously even if effort were made to make a better and helpful society, there’s still have ethical and mindset problems
