Notion Anglais : Myth and heroes
I am going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion : A myth can be defined as a story about gods or heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon.
I – The real heroes of life in society and history
First of all , J-F kennedy’s plan “mission to the moon” was announced in 1962. He wanted to conquer space and wanted the U.S.A to be the first nation to walk on the moon.
On July 20th 1969 , N.Armstrong, B.Aldrin and M.Collins were the first astronauts to land on the moon, and N.Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. He planted the American flag and declared “It’s a small step for a men, one giant leap for mankind”.
When they come back on Earth, there are adulated and considered as heroes.
On september 11th 2001, two planes crashed into twin towers in N.Y and destroy them. The firefighters were exhausted, hopeless and helpless… In the middle of the rubble.
It also exists political heroes for example Nelson Mandela. he was the symbol of the apartheid. he stayed 27 years in jail and became a symbol of harmony and peace in his country and was elected president in 1994, he became the hero of the reconciliation of the whole nation.
All of them have an impact and modify our lives. They change or have changed the course of History and the actual society.
Besides, Firefighters worked hard to save people’s lives. A lot of them died while doing their duty. The street of N-Y looked like a war scene. A whole nation wanted to pay tribute to them and will always remember their heroes. Ceremonies are organized every year.
Some people as firefighters can be defined as heroes by their commitments to the community others by they achievements or by the way they surpass themselves.
For instance Aimee Mullins, In spite of her handicap ( she is amputated of her legs),was a champion and when she was at college, she was sprinting against non-amputees thanks to her carbon-fiber prosthetic legs. Aimee is a strong-willed, very determined young woman. It must have been difficult for her to become an athlete and a model but she overcame all the obstacles and hardship.
II – Myths and fictive hero in society and history
On the other hand, the story of the myth of the west : with this myth a thousand of immigrants and people living on the east decided to go to the West to have free land and a better life. It was described like a great and fantastic adventure, but the reality was completely different, the climate was harsh, there were dust storms, tornados. In books, movies people usually show only the positive aspect of the west and not negatives one.
it’s the same for the American dream,a lot of Mexicans are crossing the border over the wall that separates the U.S from Mexico. Because hey dream of a better life, a good job and more money. But in reality when there arrive, the life is different from what they have dreamed, they often do manual jobs
