Myths and heroes: Comporaison between Dracula from Bram Stocker and Twilight written by Stephanie Meyer

(Introduction)

1/ To deal with “myths and heroes” I’d like to talk about vampires.

2/ Vampires are mythical creature. People are fascinated by them. The myths has given birth to many films and novels : “Dracula” by Bram stoker or more recently “Twilight” by Stephanie Meyer.

3/ But are the vampires in Twilight the same as the traditional vampires?

The traditional vampires like Dracula wear black cloaks. Their face is pasty. They have protruding fangs.

They drink human blood.

They are repelled by garlic and holy symbols (crucifix, holy wafer). They sleep in coffins. They can fly like bats.

They are weird, threatening foreigners. They have a strange voice and stranger dining habits.

If they bite someone, the person can die or turn into a vampire.

Twilight is a novel written by Stephanie Meyer and published in 2005. The film Twilight was released in 2008 and it was a hit. The new vampire like Edward in Twilight has changed for the best. He is super-cool, lusted after by girls, envied by boys.

Edward doesn't kill people and he doesn't drink human blood. He feeds on animal blood only. He falls in love with a human girl, Bella. He loves her but he first refuses to kiss her because he fears he might bite her and drink her blood. He is a handsome, trendy school student. He is sexy and sympathetic: the reader or the audience like him.

Howewer, all vampires are not like Edward. Some vampires kill people and drink their blood. Their victims turn into vampires. The vampire who hunts Bella “has unparalleled senses, absolutely lethal”.

They are cruel and wicked but they are different from the traditional image of the vampire. They don't wear black cloaks. They are young, trendy and good-looking.

To conclude, in Twilight  vampires are good or bad. Bad vampires are evil creatures, quite close to the traditional vampires except for their appearance. But good vampires refuse to feed on human blood and reach the status of hero as far as Edward is concerned.
