Definition of the notion

A myth is a popular story concerning larger than life characters. It istransmitted by tradition and has often markend people’s minds, literature, the arts and history.

A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievement, a super-hero, or maybe a role model, icon, like a defender of common values or a politician.

3 domains of application of the notion

We can develop the theme of myths and heroes on at least three levels.

• Anybody can be a hero in everyday life, if he or she performs on action that is out of the ordinary, recognised by everybody, and that imposes respect.

• In literature, movies, comics and the arts, a hero is sometimes recognised by his physical appearance, but more importantly by his moral qualities: courage power, compassion, sense of responsibility and charisma.

• At the mythical level, the “heroes” are gods or divinities, of a different sort of existence than ordinary people. The stories of their attributes and actions are at the foundation of the history and culture of a nation.

Example 1

Among the heroes which are admired because of their achievement or messages, which do courageous things, fight for something or want to serve others, there is Rosa Parks.The segregation was still the norm in the 50’s in the south of USA, but one day she pick up the bus and sat in the front. Yet black people were supposed to sit in the back. She was arrested by the police. Finaly the rules for riding buses changed. Rosa Parks is known as a national hero and as a shy girl who stood up against racism and faught for freedom. She is too a myth because everybody know her history particullary black people and she is in pupil’s textbooks.

Example 2

Among today’s heroes at the small scale -like people that surround us all day, the red cross, relief organizations, doctors, nurses, surgeons, soldiers- there is Wesley Autrey. This is the story of an ordinary man who fell on the rail of the metro, while having an epileptic seizure. A train was arriving, so a someone on a platform, Wesley Autrey, jumped on the tracks to save the man. This man come out his heroism to come to somebody rescue, he go beyond his limits. He is one of those amazing people who could be considered like heroes because they choose a risky jobs or just have dedication, perseverance, bravery and fearlessness.

Commentary

To conclude, fictivious heroes are simply entertainment, world-famous heroes are explications of our way of life today because they had defend humanitarian ideas. But don’t forget today’s heroes those to whom we don’t give enouth recognition. Whithout them would’nt be all there.

Application of the examples to others notions

I can say that world-famous heroes are part of notion Idea of progress. Because the world is always in progress and this people shooed the society. By their stories they do changes, evolution from an old order to a new order.
