Liberty Island

I'm going to speak about Liberty Island. In the first part, I will tell about its historical side. In my second part, I will talk about its tourist side. To finish, I will give my own personnal opinion.

First Part

Liberty Island is a small uninhabited island of Upper Bay on which was erected the Statue of Libert, its area is 6 hectares. The name of ' Liberty Island ' has been used from the beginning of the 20th century, but the island has been officially renamed in 1956. Before the build of the Liberty Statue. The Island has been known under the names of Oyster Island and Bedloe's Island.

After being the propriety of two traders Adolphe Philipse and Henry Lane, period during which it will be requisitioned by New York to install a quarantine center against smallpox (Variole) . It was bought in 1746 by Archibald Kennedy, Kennedy's clan leader, which install a summery residence, it also allowed the island to be used as quarantine center against smallpox. New York acquired the island on Frebruary 18th, 1758, for one thousand dollars, to make a quarantine center against the plague.

It 's in 1800 that the federal government recovers the island to ensure the fortification. Thus was built from 1806 to 1811, Fort Wood (named in honor of Lieutenant-Colonel Eleazer Derby Wood who fought in the Anglo-American War of 1812), a defensive work, built of granite on an eleven-pointed star plan, which earned him the nickname Star Fort (the "strong star"). This fort kept its military activity until 1944.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the island is monitored day and night by patrols of the US Coast Guard.
