Intro : what writers have in common ? Even if they have different manners or styles, they have in common the passion for words. Writers can deliver a message through a poem or a short story. They can even write their own life, so it is an autobiography. There can be a character or many characters. There are many types of book like science fiction, romance, or even thriller. Writing can be a way to inform, to entertain, remember or amaze. In fact there is no limit to the form a write can take.

So this is why we are going to focus on how a writer uses words to paint pictures and imaginary universes. In order to answer to this question, I have chosen 2 documents : a Haiku by Anon, a poem called “40 love” by Roger McGough, and the last document is a picture from the movie “Alice in Wonderland”.

PART ONE

I – Haiku

Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry which usually celebrates Nature. A haiku consists of 3 lines of verse. The first and the last lines have 5 syllables each and the second have 7 syllables. In Haiku poem, words are chosen for their intensity. The haiku I have chosen is:

It’s cold – and I wait

For someone to shelter me

And take me from here.

This poem is very short and subjective. We can imagine that the author just talks about someone in a cold place maybe on an ice rink waiting from someone maybe her lover by example or we can imagine something deeper: perhaps someone in depression (the cold place) waiting for someone to help her. In fact the author let the reader imagine whatever he wants with these words and this form of poetry.

PART 2

II – 40 Love

This poem is particular. Indeed, the author uses the structure in a ingenious way to get its theme across.

Middle aged couple playing tennis, when the game ends and they go home, the net will still be between them.

First of all, the title “40-love” is really interesting. The figure of “40” stands for the age of the middle-aged couple. And “40-love” is a scoring term in tennis. Tennis scoring is love. In fact, here love means Zero.

The couple has no connection and is distant, and this is why the writer used the structure to intensify the distance between them.

PART 3

III – Alice in Wonderland

In this poster from Alice in wonderland we can see many things. What is striking is the absurdity of the universe. There are giant mushrooms, a rabbit with a clock, a caterpillar smoking, and even cat who disappear. It is crazy to think that all of these details come from the author’s mind. The author created a whole imaginary and crazy world just by using words.

Conclusion: Writers can create universes more or less normal, but also characters and their personality just by using words, noun, adjectives and imagination to take the reader in their own world.
