George Orwell wrote "1984" in 1948 (the reversal of the last two digits would be one of the explanations of the title) and published it in 1949.

This novel takes place in London, capital of the first aerial region of "Oceania", one of the world powers with "Eurasia" and "Estasia". These three empires are constantly at war. "Oceania" has experienced several revolutions for 30 years and also an atomic conflict.

"Oceania" lives under a dictatorship. The only party possessing power is commanded by an invisible leader whose portraits are everywhere, he is called "Big Brother."

The latter, however, monitors everybody's slightest movements, hence the slogan, which symbolizes the party "Big Brother is watching you!".

Three slogans govern this universe: "War is peace", "Freedom is slavery", "Ignorance is strength"; Four ministries organize it - Truth, Peace, Love, Abundance - and the population is divided into three classes - the Inner Party (the rulers), the External Party (subordinates), the proletarians (workers and workers The slums).

Winston Smith, the main character in the novel, works at the Ministry of Truth. He retouch the newspapers already published to correct the errors of the Party because the Party is never wrong and once history has been rewritten, the errors have been erased. Certainty that they never existed.

The novel takes place in three stages: the slow progression of the criminal personality of Winston which then becomes "rebel to the policies of the Party". Then his love with a young woman, Julia. Winston Smith and Julia try to love but this will not realise because one of the spies of the party the enigmatic O'Brien.

Finally ,Winston was arrested and tortured before being released, totally broken.

«In this counter-utopia», Orwell proposes a reflection on the ruin of man by the confiscation of thought and the proliferation of the rise to power with the help of new technologies".
