Presentation Idea of progress

The notion I am going to deal with is the idea of progress. Fist let me define the notion. Progress can be the fact that there is an evolution in various domains like technologies, eating habits, people’s toughts etc...

The question I am going to deal with is in what extent can we say that society has been marked by social progress?

I will illustrate this presentation with 3 documents wich are The lovings, Hidden Figures and Made in Dagenham.

First of all I will talk about Hidden Figures, a movie that changed people’s minds. This movie is a blockbuster that tells the story of Katherine Johnson, a black woman who works at the black department in NASA and her talent to resolve hard calculations. Katherine has been hired in the orbital mission team to calculate the orbital flight of the rocket. In 1962, era where the story took place, the American society was extremely segregated. It can be illustrated by the fact that Mary Jackson, Katherine’s collegue, couldn’t become an engineer because of her skin color : she had to ask the permission to stydu in a with only school. Taraji P. Henson, the actress who played Katherine Johnson’s role said that she never heard about these three women who accomplished such an important work. Thanks to them, discrimination against African-American community strated to be questioned.

Secondly I will focus on Made in Dagenham, a fight for equality. On june 1968, Sheila Douglass and other women sewing-machinists took on the mighty Ford company over sex dicrimination in job grading. The strike had a huge impact forcing Ford to it knees and feeding the growing calls for women‘s equality. On of the women did a speech in front of men in order to show that women do a lot more than men but people are less grateful for what they do. She talks about the death of one of her friend’s husband that forced her to go to work in order to feed her children. With this emotional vocabulary and her sensitivity, people has been touched and started change their minds. Women will start earning a little bit more money but Sheila and her collegues gave faith to every woman in the world.

Finnaly I am going to talk about The Lovings and their hardly accepted love story. It’s one of the oral comprehension that we did in class. It’s about Mildred and Richard Loving. It’s a mix race couple from Virginia who won an historic court rulling. Mildred is a black woman with Indian American origins and she fell in love with a white men. But in the 60’s mix couples were illegal so they have been arrested while they where wleeping. There, a big court rulling started : Mildred and Richard did their best to have a peaceful life together and to help other mix couples leaving their love story as they want it to be. Thanks to them, laws against mix race couples don’t exist anymore. People’s minds changed because they saw that this kind of couple wants the same things as a white only couple which are having children, having a cocoon where they can start a new life as a couple etc...

To sum up, society has been marked
