Derek Redmond is a retired British athlete who proved to the whole world that everyone is capable of overcoming injuries and progressing in athletics and overall in sport. Many have been inspired by Redmond and also am I.

Derek Redmond was born on the third of September 1965 in Bletchley in Buckinghamshire. The story of Derek Redmond begins when he goes to Roade school at the age of 8. Redmond begins with athletics in 1975 when he was 10 years old. Firstly, he practised 3 times a week and with the of 15 he really finds out that he has a talent and that he could be and become very good at that sport and specially in 400 metres. At that time he begin to train 6 times a week and specialised him for 400 metres. Redmond was always training at a multi-use sports hall, which was later on named after him.

Redmond’s athletic career really begins in 1985, when he first broke the British record for the 400 metres with a run of 44.82 seconds. This record was subsequently broken by Roger Black, but Redmond reclaimed later on the record in 1987. In 1986, Redmond won the gold medal at the European Championship with his British team in 4x400 metres. The following year,he was part of the team, who won silver medal in 4x400 metres. At the 1991 World Championships, Redmond won the gold medal with that same team in that same discipline. This win, was legendary for the whole world because they won against the favorite;which were the American team. Injuries constantly interrupted Redmond's career. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, he pulled out of the opening round of the 400 metres 90 seconds before his heat because of an injury to his Achilles tendon. Before the 1992 Summer Olympics, he had undergone eight operations due to injuries. He retired after this Summer Olympics because of a serious injury. Redmond is now the trainer of a basketball team in London and motivates young athletes. He got also two children with Sharron Davies who is a British Olympic swimmer, he married to her in 1994.

Some people think that a "hero" is a lifesaver or someone that has done something amazingly awesome. That's wrong, to me it is someone that has inspired or helped people. So an inspiring hero to me is Derek Redmond. He shows the qualities of: Courage, Perseverance and Determination. In 1992, at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona Redmond was determined to break another record and get a medal. Derek Redmond passed the first heat with the best time of all and also the quarter final. But something amazing happened in the semi final, he got of to a great start when suddenly he fell to the ground after one hundred fifty metres of running. Lying there gasping for air as the pain got the better of him. Redmond had just ripped his right hamstring and ripped up his running future. After a few seconds, he started to get up and hobble to the finish line because he wanted to finish the race no matter what. As Redmond had already passed 100 metres hobbing, a man came from the stands and ran onto the track. This man was his father and he said while helping him to finish the race “We will start together and finish together.” Together, they took the Olympic spirit to a new height and showed the world the real meaning of sportsmanship.

This fact told me that it is not winning challenges and in this case races that always make you the man of honor but it is the “never-give-up” attitude
