In text one and text two, the authors present their ideas about their experience by the use of specific themes, a precise language. However, the two texts include many differences in the way their perspective are demonstrate.
On the one hand, the text one takes place in the Arctic circle, in Tromsø, where weather is extremely cold. The action occurs during the day as the narrator, who is an amateur of swimming in extreme conditions and accompanied of multiples expert is getting ready to swim in a negative temperature sea, « Strangely, being almost naked in that temperature(-4°C) already feels like quite a commitment to the old of cold ». This quote shows how cold the water is and how it feels to be faced to extreme conditions. On the other hand, text two takes place in the grand canyon in the state of Utah in America, where the weather is very hot and dry. The narrator is unaccompanied and an expert in hiking. The action occurs during day and night as his journey will last for 127 hours due to his hand being stuck between to rocks, « When I look up, the backlit chockstone falling towards by head consume the sky ».This quote depicts the action in which his hand is getting stuck as the rock falls on him. Both text present the themes of extreme sports, extreme conditions and danger.
In text one, the narrator’s experience is depicted by the use of a specific lexicon, composed of many adjectives and adverbs used to describe the place, creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere, « the fire is already lit and it’s burning beautifully ». Here the adverb « beautifully » sets a relaxed ambiance. To add to this, the author employs humour which is creating by a lack of understanding by the narrator, « this whole ‘people dying’ thing was rather downplayed in the pre-pep talk ». This sentence reflect the author’s lack of understanding as she first learns about he danger of this activity after she had done it. However, in text two, the author uses a technical vocabulary such as naming the rocks, « chockstone » or such as making reference to anatomy, « while my body’s chemicals are raging at full flood » to depict the seriousness of the situation. In addition to this, the author uses powerful words to depict the narrator’s emotion, « I grimace and growl », to depict the tension and his anxiety.
In conclusion, similarities and differences are found in the way the authors’ express their experiences which is due to opposite conditions when practicing their sport.
