Duality
First of all, gothic was present in architecture but over the years gothic appears in literature, movies art and fashion. The duality also know as double personality was an important feature in Gothic Literature, thanks to this, Gothic Literature became more palpitant. Duality in gothic literature is when an evil side of a main character is revealed thus there are two different indentities in only one body. In The picture of dorian gray and Mr Hyde we have perfect instances of duality, we have an evil side for each main characters so now we are going to study the causes of this duality and consequences of this duality.
In Dr Jekyll, Jekyll is a doctor, an high class who want to hide his envy to the society, so he decides to create a potion who will separate him in two entities but he didn't know that this would go that far and create is alter ego who will be known as Mr Hyde (his evil side). In The Picture of Dorian Gray, the fact that Dorian has another side maybe we could relate to Naughty 90s know as Gay 90s because actually Oscar Wilde has another personality which is gay that he tried to hide that's why he wanted to create a character with that kind of feature. So Dorian Gray is a gentleman and his desire to be beautiful forever started to take over him, he says " if it were i who was to be always young...for that....i would give my soul for that". So in order to be beautiful, he dealt with the devil and his other indentity with bad actions were reflected on the painting.
Needless to say that in The Picture of dorian gray, the desire of the young men took over himself and so lead him to a bad personality and superficialité because he loved Sibyl just for her acting and when once she has acted badly he didn't fall in love anymore so he broke her heart thus this bad action had repercussion on his painting. At the end his evil side is clearly shown when he lost control suddenly and kills Basil with "an uncontrollable feeling of hatred" we could compare this situation to Mr Hyde when he committed a crime with " a great flame of anger", the evil side of Jekyll has completly took over him thus he has lost control and committed multiples crimes in London . Those two extracts show the extreme violence of their duality
To conclude we can say that those characters are first of all human beings and they had good reputation in the society, they were highly regarded. But because they wanted to hide certaing things, it's led to a tragic end.
