1 : Questions de compréhensions

  • What is the basic wage of a Chinese worker?

Chinese workers are paid 64 cents an hour without take account of the room and board costs, they work 74 hours per week.

  • What are the 3 things they are not allowed to do during their working hours? And what happens if they break the rules?

During their working hours, the workers are not allowed to talk, listen to music, look around them, put their hands in their pockets or go to the toilet. If a worker break the rules, he’ll be fined.

  • How did HP, Dell and Microsoft react to the NLC’s report?

The companies involved in the NLC’s report said that they would investigate conditions at the factory. Dell and Microsoft are working on it but HP pretend that the factory is not a direct supplier for them.

This document is an article from UK website Computerweekly.com, its untitled “Prison-like conditions for workers making IBM, Dell, HP, Microsoft and Lenovo products” and was published on the 17th of February 2009. It deals with the hard work conditions of Chinese in factory. For this review, I’m going to show how Chinese workers deals with daily work conditions in the factories. Next, I’ll investigate on the companies’ reactions to the NLC’s report.

I) - Working conditions for Chinese labors:

  • 74 hours per week for a wage of 64 cents an hour
  • Strict rules and tough rhythms in the assembly lines.
  • Workers feels like they are in prison and have no choices

II) - Companies responding to this report:

  • Promising to investigate work conditions and nothing else
  • The factories still providing those companies and no contract will be canceled.
  • Companies behaves as innocents and say they have nothing to do with those factories

For conclusion, even that work conditions seems to be terrible and not really respectful for Chinese worker, the road to improvement is still very long and companies shows no hope or guilt and don’t realize the terrible cost on Chinese labors.
