David Lynch is an American filmmaker, photographer, musician and painter. His innovative and surreal style, sometimes called "lynchian", became famous. It is characterized by its dreamlike imagery and meticulous sound design. In 1990, Lynch teams up with Marc Frost, American novelist, screenwriter for film and television and producer. Together, they will co-write the Twin Peaks series.
The review I am about to make will focus on the pilot episode of the series.
First of all, it must know that Twin Peaks is a genius twisted series. Without exagerating, Twin Peaks is one of the most unforgettable works dedicated to double and human complexity in general. It was a real UFO for the epoch. One understand from the pilot episode that the series will stand out. Indeed, we feel a real atmosphere, a very particular framing and an impeccable staging
The synopsis is very simple in appearance: a young woman, Laura Palmer, is finded dead in a plastic bag at the water's edge. An FBI special agent, Agent Dale Cooper, with the help of the local police, will attempt to discover the murder.
This is not entirely a police series as one might think at first. It actually touches everything (Fantasy, comedy, soap opera, Mystical SF etc …)
In this pilot episode, we find David Lynch's "touch", if only by the strange atmosphere and the soundtrack. The atmosphere is relaxed, unreal, magical, Fantastic and disturbing. The aestheticism of the images and the nagging music increase this impression of strangeness. The forest, which is set to play a central role in Twin Peaks, is the place of all threatsThe soundtrack is very retro, dear to the 80s, and reminds most of the soap opera. This soundtrack is awesome. How not to fall in love with the music of Angelo Badalamenti. Lynch has worked with him since his previous film, Blue Velvet (1987), and their collaboration will then continue on almost all of Lynch's films
As in any Lynch movie, Twin Peaks is filled with enigmatic, sometimes hermetic, elements that hold a major place in the plot. Lynch plays on appearances (obviously deceptive, characters often have a second nature) and on the issue of double (exploited again in Lost Highway ( 1997) and Mulholland Drive 2001).
The presence of many contradictory elements warns the viewer against a dual nature of things. For example, in the opening credits, The vision of this natural landscape seems contradictory to the presence of a polluting plant. The abundant smoke from the chimneys rising vertically from the factory contrasts with the violent fall of the water. This short generic, built on a dualism of the top and bottom, seems to end on the image of a confused disorder. Especially since the current ends up leading to a macabre discovery - a corpse stranded on a bank - which is the starting point of the story. These contradictions let the viewver knows that Under the innocent young girl, there is a debauchee; Under the good father ther is an incestuous father
So,In this pilot episode, we find the notion of good and evil with this duality.
Concerning the technical side of the pilot episode, transitions are very worked. For exemple, From the photograph of Laura in the galleries of the hig school, we pass to the same photo with the parents of Laura. These worked transitions give the impression that the series is governed by an implacable logic. A logic of associations of ideas and words, as in dreams.
Lynch often adopts very open focal lengths, distancing the characters who become miniatures as in Jacques Tati's movies.
