I’m going to deal with the notion of myths and heroes. To begin with, I’m going to give a definition of the notion. A myth can be defined as a popular belief or a story that people believe in but which is not necessarily true. A myth can illustrate the fundamental moral values of a country. As for a hero, it is someone who is ready to fight or even to sacrifice his or her life for an ideal. To illustrate this notion, my presentation will focus on the American Dream. This founding myth has indeed shaped American society over the centuries. So, in this respect, we can ask ourselves if the American Dream is really achievable or if it is only a delusion. So I will first show how the American Dream has given hope to millions of people and then I will focus on the limits of the myths.

First of all, the American Dream be the belief that in American people can climb the social ladder and become successful through hard work even when starting from scratch. In other words, it means that you can start from scratch and become a billionaire. People like Jan Koum who created what’s App or Howard Schultz who created Starbucks are good examples. They started at the bottom of the ladder, believe in the American Dream and have became billionaires. They couldn’t possibly become what there are without hard work through. Hard work is very important to achieve the American dream. They can choose the life they want. The American Dream is a promise in the declaration of independence. Everyone has, in theory, the opportunity to pursue their own dream and to have the same chance to succeed and be happy. For some people, it means getting a better education, advancing oneself, having hopes for the future. For others, it is having an equal chance to succeed, to practicing your religion and not being persecuted for it or making money to support your family.

Form many Americans, America offers opportunities and most importantly, the opportunity to be free: you have the possibility to do the job you want to do, the opportunity to practice your religion freely. In class, we saw that the American Dream gave hope to millions people who lived in Europe in the 19th and 20th century. People who immigrated to the USA wanted to escape poverty, starvation, war and they hoped to have a better life in the USA, to live in peace, to choose the job of their drams. Some other want to fleeing religious or political oppression.

We can see the American dream give hope for many people and some people who have succeed is like Tommy Hilfiger is an example for many people who still believe in American dream. They have proved the American dream is not a myth but is truly real.

But many others think the American dream is a myth and is impossible to achieve. In the early 20 the century, some immigrants could be sent back to their native country if they failed the medical examinations on Ellis Island or because of their criminal past. That’s why Ellis Island was nicknamed the Island of tears so they didn’t get a chance to pursue their dreams. For some people, the American dream is not real and they think it is an illusion. Some people try to work hard to pursue their dream but their efforts were useless.
