Helen Soteriou interviewed installation artist, designer and urban planner Candy Chang about projects she made throughout the years mainly across the USA, such as Before I Die, I wish I was (a sticker project), and Looking For Love Again.
Wanting to make the cities she lives in more comfortable for people, she gets her inspiration from asking herself a few questions about people’s personal daily life. This way, she was really able to picture what could really matter to those people. Throughout her projects, she aims to redefine the way people share their personal information with the public. She declares as well that by creating a new design of the cities, the people who live there and who participate in creating this new organization can help reflecting what’s really important to them as residents. She’s been affected by personal events that have made her realize that she wanted to enjoy cities with people she loved. And so she wanted to figure out ways that could help her make cities and places different and she started fooling around with public space.
From there she talks about her first project Before I Die. She started putting up her installation piece on the wall of a house that has been “collecting dusk and tags” for many years. She was then very surprised by the reception of the public and the respect people had for her wall. She’s been amazed by the difference and the depth of the responses she got and that helped her realizing that everyone is alike, despite differences between each and everyone, and that no one is alone
