Aboriginal artwork:

Intro:

Aborigines belong to the oldest population living in Australia. They live there for nearly 40 000 years. The British settlers were saying that it was a population that was only hunting and that they were not attached to their territory or their culture, but this is not true, aboriginal clans were meeting and celebrating ceremonies together and sharing their lifestyles and also ingenious and lasting agriculture techniques and ideas of village constructions.

Artwork description and part of the historical culture:

This drawing represents aboriginal dancers that are dancing for a corroboree ceremony.

In the foreground we can see a group of six dancers, they are all shirtless, but they are wearing loincloths. They all have body paintings in warm color tons, and they are also wearing decorated headbands. This drawing is a caption of a choreography, they are all on foot and their handclapping on their chest. According to their face, we can suppose that they are singing aboriginal songs. Behind them, we can see a fire in the center of the drawing. They are dancing on the sand and the dancers are surrounded by their people. In the background, the people looking at the dancers, are aborigines, and they are also covered by body paintings. Behind the spectators, we can see trees, so we may think that the ceremony is happening in nature.

In this drawing, the people are celebrating a “Corroboree”.

A corroboree is a ceremony that involves costumes, dancers, and musicians. Each part of the country owns their type of “corroboree”. However, it is a ritual and this word is used to include any big or noisy gathering. This ceremonial is a time when people can interact with the Dreamtime through music, costume, and dance. People from outside of the community are not permitted to participate or to observe the cult.

We should not forget that cults and ceremonies are a big part of their culture since it began. It still plays an important part of their history. They are still practiced in parts of Australia in the belief that it will guaranty enough food, water, and plants to live.

Title and explanations:

I decided to call my artwork “Bringing past to present” because it reminds to the spectator through the title that Australian culture is founded by its aboriginal roots and that it is unforgettable. It shows that Australia is partly based on this culture and its history and nowadays during Australia day or celebrations related to the country we should put forward this part of Australia’s identity
