Dance is a universal way for dancers of expressing themselves and their feelings. But dance can also be used as a powerful tool to oppose political, social or economical situations or facts.

It has been used, many times by many different artists who dance different genres. But does it truly and genuinely work, and can dance be considered as a powerful form of protest?

I think yes, protest dance is an artistic way like any other to revolt and express your mind and concerns.

For that matter, any genre from ballet to flamenco can be used to question a certain situation and that in every country. For instance, the ballerinas of the Garnier Opera danced “Swan Lake” in front of the famous building taking action against one of many reforms by the actual French President Emmanuel Macron; in the same genre, the Vietnamese ballet “ Into sunlight” also protested against a national issue, denounce police violence and brutality during the Vietnamese war .

Some choreographies, as old as they seem can also help protest against relevant actions today, like the dance “Within the quota”, which was created decades ago but still manages to touch the public showing the universality of dance protest.

Realistically, not everyone can perfectly participate in that form of protest but I believe that is what gives it its power.
