“A Bias Problem” is an article written by Jackie Koerner in June 2019. In this article, the author write about her complicated relationship with Wikipedia and the problems coming along with it.
In the first paragraph, Jackie explains that she has mixed feeling about Wikipedia. She likes working with other people but mostly she loves providing free and easy informations for everybody to see and learn. Despite that, she dislikes certains things that she saw in certain article that made her feel uncomfortable. One of the problem that she noticed is sexism. She talked about one time when the contributors needed more space in the category “American Novelist’ so they needed to make more room for new novelist. Without questioning themselves, they eliminated the women American novelist of the category and put them in a brand new category. It seem that they didn’t saw the problem. However, the women have just as the same right as men to be in that category.
The second paragraph is dedicated to bias. Bias is a thought that you have on someone or something before actually learning to know it. The author explains that everyone has biases and it don’t make us bad people. Biases are taught to us throught out our entire life evene if we don’t want to. These biases are shared by our relatives and the society. Our actions are influenced by our biasess.
In conclusion, Jackie Koerner explains the awful effect that bis can have on Wikipedia because if one of the contributors write an article about a subject they are biased about, then this article won’t be objective and the information will be wrong. People reading it will be given false information. She also explains that her love-hate relationship with the website and the problems going with it. The purpose of this article could be to denounce the problem that Wikipedia have.
