There are several reasons for this:
Firstly, deeply rooted cultural and traditional practices such as the caste system, dowry, and preference for sons continue to be prevalent in many parts of India. Despite efforts to increase education and literacy rates, these discriminatory practices continue, particularly in rural and less developed areas.
Secondly, unequal access to prenatal healthcare and ultrasound technology has contributed to sex-selective abortion, particularly in areas where the preference for sons remains strong. While illegal in India, this practice still continues in some circles.
Thirdly, the patriarchal values of India society reinforce the preference for sons, as they are viewed as "heirs" capable of carrying on the family name and lineage. This mindset is deeply ingrained in many parts of Indian society and is difficult to change.
Finally, rapid urbanization in India has also contributed to the preference for sons, as families view them as having a better chance of success and supporting the family in urban areas.
In conclusion, the issue of discrimination at birth in India is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted solution. While modernity has contributed to improvements in some areas, deeply rooted cultural practices patriarchal biases, and socioeconomic inequalities continue to exacerbate the problem. To address this issue, efforts must be made to change societal values, increase access to healthcare and education, and combat this issue on all fronts to create a society that values all children equally
