1. What change do women bring in politics?

Women make up a quarter of the 470 seats in the US Congress in 2018. Determined, they want profound changes in politics. By bringing new skills and different perspectives, they are helping to shape a new political order. Women involved in government decision making are raising the profile of women’s rights around the world. Some of their major concerns are violence against women and a desire for greater equality. Although this issue is not exclusive to women, it is receiving increasing attention. Women have a more sensitive view on certain subjects and thus reach more people. They want to support the causes that are important to them and do not shy away from anything.

1. Who is Cori Bush?

In Missouri, democrat Cori Bush, elected to the House of Representatives in 2020, became the first black woman to represent the state in Congress. She symbolizes a new political landscape where African American and Hispanic women have never been so present. She is part of the left wing of the democratic party. In addition, very involved, she participated in the protests police brutality in Ferguson in 2014 and later, becomes a figure in the Black Lives Matter movement. A nurse and from a working-class background, she advocates for an increase in the minimum wage, universal health coverage and police reform, among over things.

1. Pick out elements from the text to describe the movie’s subject.

The film "a western in the hands of a revisionist" was created by Mario Van Peebles in 1993. It is an entertainment film but also has the purpose of educating about the history of past westerns (line 6). The story is actually "a flashback from the memories of an anonymous old man. During the Spanish-American War, a band of black heroes unite to fight an enemy (line 14-15). At the beginning of the second paragraph, we understand that through their adventures, the filmmaker wants to denounce "the racial attitudes of the most thoughtless images of Hollywood cowboys and Indians.

1. Explain whether or not you would watch this movie.

Personally, I love western movies, it plunges us in another time and in a universe that we don't know. Following the adventure, the landscapes, the action allows us to escape. We follow a story most of the time pleasant that gives us pleasure. I would certainly have watched this movie because it seems to me very interesting and very rich in historical reality. When I was younger, I loved to watch Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West", it's the first movie that really marked me in westerns.

Exercice 3:   Look at the picture, describe it briefly, and then write about your emotional response to it

This document is a photograph of Lil Nas X at the Grammy Awards in January 2020. This singer is dressed as a cowboy all in pink, these clothes are rather tight adorned with small details, which is rather unusual and out of the ordinary when you think of the image of a cowboy. I'm very surprised by this choice of outfit but I think it's quite beautiful that it's a man of color who revisits the cowboy look in a totally different way. I think he wanted to send a message, to show that we don't have to worry about how others look at us and that we are free to assert ourselves these days.
