Cyberpoetry

From Emily Dickinson to more recent poets such as Maggie Nelson, poetry has always had

the power to speak to the soul in an incredible way. In times of crisis and when words are lacking,

poetry is still a way to express the inexpressible. But what about cyberpoetry?

Cyberpoetry is a form of poetry that emerged during the 90s which refers to poetry produced

thanks to technologies and poetry related to cyberculture. Cyberpoetry is easily accessible to

everyone, allowing people to escape from the real world instantly. Indeed, thanks to websites like

Vispo, it is possible for anyone to share their feelings with a community of vusers through a screen

and thus express the inexpressible when real words are lacking.

Moreover, there are new forms of cyberpoetry such as holopoetry, a three-dimensional form of

poetry whose meaning can change when looking at it. These new types of poetry are not only based

on words but also on shapes or light, everything that is different from ordinary language, which

allows the poet to express itself and viewers to understand a poem simply by looking at its shape.

The holopoem Taroko Gorge is a good example of this: the poem is a river, it recreates the idea of

perpetual change in nature or even creativity. In that sense, cyberpoetry and especially holopoetry is

a way for the poet to express himself other than with ordinary language, it also creates for the

viewer an escape from the real world: for instance with Taroko Gorge, he can imagine himself

contemplating a canyon.

To sum up, cyberpoetry nowadays allows anyone to express themselves through technology

when words sometimes run out.
