  • The symbols of the Republican Party, commonly referred to as the GOP (abbreviation for Grand Old Party) are the elephant (humility, courage and strength), and the red colour.
  • The Republican Party's current ideology is American the conservatism.
  1. Electoral history

The party has won 24 of the last 40 US presidential elections and there has been a total of 19 Republican presidents, the most from any one party.

It controls majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

More famous presidents (for them political positions):

As far Donald Reagan has done, the republican ideology is for deregulation: the market doesn’t need too much rules, fences and restrictions to work. For instance, Donald Reagan, with the help or Margaret Thatcher during the 80’ years, they have totally deregulated the financial markets.

  1. Political positions

  1. Immigration

Republicans support a position focused on securing the border and deporting illegal immigrants (supported by populists).

In 2016 the field of candidates took a sharp position against illegal immigration, with leading candidate Donald Trump proposing building a wall along the southern border with Mexico and using tariffs on goods imported from Mexico to pay for construction.

  1. Foreign policy and national defense

Some in the Republican Party support unilateralism on issues of national security. For example, after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Bush administration supported neoconservative policies: they decided themselves of the invasion, in 2001 in Afghanistan and in 2003 in Iraq.
