Idea of Progress

The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change, a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. Since the creation of new technologies, we have done major discoveries like cures for illnesses, cloning or genetically modified organisms. This notion considers also the link between the man and the changing of the society. We can wonder will the discoveries of the past few years be an answer to mankind’s needs in their daily life. In my first part, I will deal with if biotechnologies will allow people to have better lives before showing if science will help feed both today’s world and tomorrow’s world.

First, the biotechnologies will allow people to have better lives especially with the research on stem cells and gene therapy seem quite encouraging. Thank to that we will be able to save many people, it could be cure different illness like Parkinson’s disease. Stem cells are capable of changing any cell type in the body including nerve cells. If the original skin cells and the therapeutic cells came from the same person, the cells are already genetically matched and can avoid rejection. In the past and up now, some research have proven their efficiency. Before people could have problems medical that we can’t resolve but now thanks to science, they don’t have those anymore or it’s partially cure. Scientist are trying to take skin cells and egg cells from the donor to fight some diseases like the Parkinson disease thanks to the use of stem cells that can differentiate in all kinds of cells. But science and biotechnologies also raises moral issues because of possibilities they give to people like in the movie Gattaca. Its trailer depicts a society where people are determined by their DNA which of their blood, saliva or a single hair. Your gene determine where you can work and even the woman you can or can’t marry. There’s just one single goal targeted to reach profession. The only way to survive if you are not perfect is to steal someone identity. If you were in that society you not live, you only survive.

In this first part, we have seen that the biotechnologies can make a better life for people because scientist have made many progress in this domain.

Now, we will study will science help feed both today’s world and tomorrow’s world. People can grow up? Indeed, like the movie The Island, the 2 principles characters are clones, their memories are not true. They don’t have a real family. They exist because the new American dream is “live forever”. Their body parts are substitute for the real ones. Their “owner” in the outside world can claim the body parts they need of their clones. That why their clones exist, in the only goal to make their real them alive. Clones are denied every single bit of humanity by their creators. Maybe, before arrive until this, the GMOs can be the answer. Thanks to the GMOs, the producers and famers are allowed to produce more and faster. The products such as the vegetables and fruits can be more nutritious and greener. But can we trust them? Monsanto is one of the biggest company that makes GMOs. They pretend they are safe and good for the world since they could answer the world’s food needs and be more sustainable and save water to grow
