Is Charles III as legitimate as his mother?

With the recent coronation, the status of Charles III has been challenged by the independence movements who do not accept him as the new king. Indeed, they put at stake his entire legitimacy and even the monarchical model. Thus we can ask ourselves, is Charles III as legitimate as his mother?

  1. He is as legitimate as his mother

On the one hand, he is an important figure of the monarchy because he embodies the new head of state and represents the new face of British people. Indeed, his coronation has been followed by millions of people in the entire kingdom and even in the world. This highlights the fact that most British care about him and give importance to the person who will become the next king. For most of them Charles III is legitimate, he is simply following the lineage: he is the one who comes after the queen. Indeed since his birth he has been prepared to become king. He is now ready to assume his role. Moreover, the king has no real power and only a representative. In fact, the question of his legitimacy should not be a problem since he is only a symbol well anchored in the English tradition. Today, if one admits that the new king is not legitimate, it also implies recognizing that the English monarchical system no longer works. This would require a complete change of system and would be very complicated in terms of political organization. The royals are not just symbols but an integral part of a network of power.

  1. However for a growing part, Charles III is no longer legitimate

The death of the Queen caused a profound rupture and reawakened the many independence movements such as in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Indeed, he was not democratically elected. In the modern world, placing such power in an unelected individual can’t be a birthright. Thus a new hashtag has appeared on social networks: # not my king. Indeed, its legitimacy is not recognized everywhere. Moreover, many scandals revolve around the former prince. He has been accused of secretly receive more than £2.5m in cash between 2011 and 2015 from the former prime minister of Qatar and his close aide Michael Fawcett resigned last year after “cash for honours” allegations. While the payments were legal, the means of transaction were surprising. Indeed, the money arrived in large denominations in suitcases and luxury bags...The former Prince of Wales also accepted a payment of £1m from the family of Osama Bin Laden. Despite his guaranteed income from taxpayers, Charles has reportedly invested millions in offshore tax havens. Between the scandals with Princess Diana, his affair with Camilla, and his dubious money dealings, Charles III is not appreciated by everyone indeed. For a very long time he remained hidden behind the image of his mother loved by all. Consequently, he's always been self-effacing and now with the death of his mother it's pretty hard for the British to put a man they don't even know into power.

Conclusion

Thus, the Queen’s death called into questions not only the position of her successor, Charles III, but also the entire monarchical system as more and more people questioned the monarchy itself. The current king may appear illegitimate to some, but it is only a matter of time before he regains legitimacy in the eyes of all and becomes as successful as his mother. It is up to him to win over the British
