This text tells the story of the safari of a group led by the author, Markham. The aim of this safari was to see and, maybe, to shoot an elephant. So, they started looking for an elephant. Of course, these men were equipped with large-calibre rifles (that could shoot an elephant). For me, the narrator is not willing to kill an elephant: “It is absurd for a man to kill an elephant.” But, fascinated by the spectacle offered them by the buffalo and the elephant, they gave up their task and left without having killed the elephant, because they could not bring themselves to slaughter such a majestic animal, and were content to have seen it in its natural environment.

Beryl Markham (1902-1986) is an English aviatrix and author. She was one of the first bush pilots! (And she is a woman!) She wrote about her adventures in her memoir, West with the Night.

Béryl Markham est nait dans le village d'Ashwell ; dans le Rutland, un comté Anglais. Elle est la fille de Charles Baldwin Clutterbuck (entraîneur de chevaux) et de Clara Agnes Clutterbuck. Elle a un frère ainé, qui se nomme Richard Alexander "Dickie" Clutterbuck. Malheureusement pour lui, il n’a vécu que 27 ans, de 1900 à 1927.

Beryl est surtout connue pour :

- Son vol en solo à travers l'Atlantique, d'est en ouest.

- Son œuvre principale, “West with the night”.

Ce fût l’une des premières femmes à avoir pu vivre de son activité dans l'aviation commerciale, même si cette possibilité existât depuis 1926 pour les femmes.

Une partie de la vie de Beryl Markham est reprit dans le film « Out of Africa » par le personnage de Felicity. Enfin, lors d'un séjour avec elle, Denys Finch Hatton s'écrase en avion, alors qu'elle avait refusé au dernier moment de l'accompagner. Cette évènement fût évidemment très marquant pour elle.
