COMPRÉHENSION ORALE

This document is a video from Youtube entitled Maslow's hierarchy of needs. In fact this video explains us the study of Maslow about the hierarchy of needs. It argues that there are five stages of human needs that motivate our behaviour. Abraham Maslow proposed his theory in 1943 after studying what he called exemplary people such as Einstein or Roosevelt. And we will see now the five different stages.

The first stage is the physiological need such as the need to breath, eat, drink or sleep. The moment we get enough of that, we get motivated by the second stage.

The second stage is the stage of safety. It’s the stage where humans try to earn money, build up resources and look for shelter to protect themselves against danger. Then, when we feel safe, we can start to think about the third stage.

The third stage is the stage of love and belonging. Humans need to be close to their families and friends, belong to a society or join a gang. But the moment we belong to a group we already want to be different and that leads us to stage four.

Stage four is the stage of esteem. Humans look for self-confidence and respect from others. We want to be someone. As an example in the video, they say that if you have money you earn a nice watch, if you have a brain ( that means if you are clever), you write or you think. Motivation to perform or to compete is now at its highest. They say that students, sportsmen and inventors excel and they took as an exemple Neil Amstrong who flew to the moon. Then if you have all of the four stages, only then, you can reach stage five.

Stage five is the stage of self- actualisation. It means to relax, give back and create things there is no more pressure unless there are troubles below.

To conclude we can say that Maslow was right and that he already knew back in 1943 how people worked. Personally, I agree with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs because it is still the way people work nowadays.
